(CNN) — The bare facts of the case cast American teenager William Leslie Arnold as a murderous villain who shot his parents because they refused to let him take their car to a drive-in in 1958.Then just 16 years old, Arnold buried their bodies in the backyard of the family’s home in Omaha, Nebraska, and went about life as normal for two weeks, until he was confronted and confessed to a crime that saw him sentenced to life in prison. From there, Arnold’s story could have followed the familiar path of a lifer — decades of incarceration before a death noted by some and mourned by few.But Arnold’s escape from prison, while still a young man in 1967, led to a totally different outcome that ended incongruously in Australia, and the death of a man by a different name, who was known as a loving father to a family who had no idea about his secret life. The murdersBlack and white press images from the 1950s show a slight boy being led into the garden of his home, s...Dartmouth country club fire being investigated as ‘possible arson’

The parents of a BU professor who died after falling through MBTA staircase are pushing for officials to address safety issues within the system. David Jones’ parents attended a Transportation Committee meeting Monday to voice their concerns. The group discussed possible changes to make the T safer, including a proposal to establish a new safety agency to oversee the T. In September 2021, Jones was killed when he fell through a crumbling set of stairs at the JFK/UMass station. His parents say they don’t want that to happen to anyone else. “David’s mother and I are asking our state legislators to stop the deaths, stop the injuries, stop the pain and suffering caused by the lack of effective leadership and oversight,” said Jones’ stepfather Kent Hamilton. “We strongly hope David will not have died in vain and that his loss will help create the conditions to ensure a safe transportation system for Massachusetts,” Hamilton added. NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are slipping on Wall Street following some mixed earnings reports. Several beaten-down banks are also dropping more after a brief respite from a brutal run. The S&P 500 was 0.5% lower in early trading Tuesday. The Dow fell 100 points, or 0.3%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.5%. So far this earnings reporting season, the majority of companies have been topping forecasts for first-quarter results. That’s largely because expectations were set quite low due to a slowing economy and high interest rates. Companies in the S&P 500 are still on track to report a second straight quarter of weaker profits from year-earlier levels.THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. SAN DIEGO -- Although taking an unattended kitten to a shelter is a caring thought, it may result in a mother cat losing her offspring.Unaltered outdoor cats usually give birth to litters of kittens during this time through September every year, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The San Diego County Department is advising the public to not "kitnap" as mother cats typically leave litters alone for stretches of time; neonatal kittens are four weeks and under and cannot survive on their own. If you find a kitten litter, first observe the kittens from a distance to not scare the mother off, according to animal experts. Those who want to help can step in only if the kittens are in immediate danger from such things as traffic or predators, if they are visibly sick or injured or if the mother cat doesn't return after six hours and feel the kittens need care.
